creating a safe space for collaboration through the universal language of the arts
In a bid to initiate a meaningful discussion among artists, educators, theatre practitioners and researchers, we explored different role-play scenarios which prompted the participants to view the world from the ‘other’s’, perspective. We sought to address otherness; the binaries of ‘us’ and ‘them’ by bridging the gap between the self and the other through activities of intense listening.
The second part of our workshop focused on the possibilities of communicating in the absence of words. Exploring the existence of a language that the body knows when it coexists with other bodies of memory. We investigated kinesthetic listening through leading-following exercises and after, facilitated a discussion that examined relationships and interactions between performers. We also focused on the significant role touch plays in transforming our relationships in a society where many people have little to no physical contact. We ended the workshop bringing those reflections from the exercise to participants' relationships in their daily lives. |
